Dr. Ben Meade

Ben Meade is a producer, director, editor, author, and composer. He is also the founder and owner of Cosmic Cowboy Studio, a new film and video production facility in downtown Fayetteville, AR. Cosmic Cowboy fosters new musical talent, hosts film and digital video projects, and partners with the University of Arkansas Communication program to support internships for undergraduates. The Studio also hosts summer camps for kids and music lessons for the elderly.

Ben is the recipient of multiple fellowships, and holds multiple degrees in radio, television, and film including a PhD in Theatre & Film from the University of Kansas. At the age of 21 he secured a job in Hollywood working for Universal Pictures. Dr. Meade is a frequent attendee of multiple national and international film festivals including Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca, Paris, Milan, Tel Aviv, and Germany.

He was also a stunt double for a number of films which we think is imminently cool.


This is a fantastic opportunity for your young one to learn about research protocol, interviewing technique, lighting, and video editing software. This is Enrollment is not open. Documentary Film Making


  • June 10 - June 14 (Fayetteville - ages 12 to 16 )

  • 9 AM - 3 PM

Our Documentary Film Making session is a unique opportunity to work directly with a well-known, seasoned, and gifted filmmaker here in Northwest Arkansas, Dr. Ben Meade. Admission is by application only and will be limited to 8 campers.

Campers will be divided into 2 teams of 4. Each team will conduct an extensive interview with an individual chosen by Dr. Meade and a member of The University of Arkansas’s David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual History. Campers selected to participate in the session will have information one week before the course begins in order to fully research the interviewee. 


Day 1:  We will formulate questions and deal with format issues for the interview in the morning, and gear/lighting issues in the afternoon. 

 Day 2: We will begin with shot composition and editing, shooting the first interview in the afternoon on day 2. 

 Day 3: This will consist of interviews 2 and 3

 Day 4: We will commence interview 4 in the morning.  The afternoon will be spent editing.

 Day 5: We will complete our editing and finish our films.


All work will take place at Cosmic Cowboy Studio at 322 Meadow in Fayetteville and at the Pryor Center on the Fayetteville Downtown Square.  


Cosmic Cowboy will provide all of the gear, lighting, and editing software needs. We will use Sony F 5 Cinecameras, LED Softlights, and Final Cut X Editing Software; but campers are free to use their own equipment if they have it. 


This is not your average NERDIES™ camp. Our Documentary Film Making camp is extremely selective and requires the submission of an application for admission. All applicants will be considered by our NERDIES™ staff and Dr. Meade. Admission notifications will be delivered June 6th.
